Muscle Relaxer Products

A muscle relaxer is a drug, supplement or herb that suppresses spasms and helps to relief pain as well. The spasms are normally caused by some sort of muscle contraction. The purpose of these muscle relaxer products, also known as antispasmodics, is to prevent spasms of the stomach intestine and urinary bladder.

Muscle relaxants are normally prescribed along with exercise, lots of rest, physical therapy or other treatments. Even though experts recommend muscle relaxants to provide all the pain relief one may need, it is not recommended as a complete substitute for the other forms of treatment. The patient may feel too comfortable while under muscle relaxants that they may feel suitable to resume physical activity, but doing so too soon may worse the injury.

Muscle relaxants work effectively for relieving muscle pain due to injuries, but are not very effective for other types of pain. Moreover, if you plan on taking any muscle relaxer drug, avoid combining with alcohol consumption or other recreational drugs, as well as operate machinery, since most of these medications work on the central nervous system.

Some herbal or natural supplements that act as muscle relaxer include peppermint oil. Peppermint oil has been traditionally used as an effective antispasmodic substance, as well as the flower liatris, which has been an effective muscle relaxer throughout the times. This flower is extremely effective against intestine spasms, reason why it has other street names such as 'colic root' or 'blazing star'.

Other products that help as muscle relaxer meds vary in effects and origins. Some of the most common include dicyclomine,
hyoscyamine and mebeverine. While  dicyclomine and hyoscyamine work in the central and peripheral nervous system blocking the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, mebeverine is a muscolotropic spasmolytic with a strong action on the smooth muscle spasm of the gastrointestinal tract, specially of the colon. Moreover, this muscle relaxer does not produce the anticholinergic side effect that both dicyclomine and hyoscyamine produce; that is worsen gastroesophageal reflux disease activity.

Without a doubt the king of all muscle relaxer medications would be Lioresal. Lioresal, also known as Baclofen, is a muscle relaxer and antispastic agent used to treat muscle spasms associate with multiple sclerosis or spinal cord injuries. This condition produces spasms, pain and stiffness, which can all be moderated with this product. However, Lioresal may also be used for other purposes not mentioned in this article.

Be aware of the side effects that most muscle relaxer products produce, which may include the following: dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and vision changes such as double or blurred vision. Other less common side effects are: stomach cramps or stomach pain, constipation, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, nervousness, heartburn, headaches or insomnia. Some of these side effects are normal and would usually go away as the person adjusts to the medication. Others may require immediate medical care before you continue getting prescribed any muscle relaxer product.
