There has been a history of valproic acid side effects, with the majority being mild to moderate in nature. Mild adverse reactions may be manifested by swollen breasts, changes to the menstruation cycle, pronounced depression, constipation, fatigue, or changes in the patient's weight. More serious valproic acid side effects that may necessitate medical intervention can include the following symptoms: skin peeling or blistering, blurred vision, hallucinations, a lack of coordination, or a chronic feeling of weakness. In addition, certain valproic acid side effects may be signs of the beginnings of liver failure and professional medical help should be sought. These valproic side effects are extreme nausea, pain in the stomach area, discolored urination, jaundice of the skin, a loss of appetite, or clay-colored bowel movements. These valproic acid side effects are rare and occur most commonly with younger children.
