Sildenafil citrate, also known as Viagra is widely used to treat erectile dysfunction. The drug has been around for over 10 years and is one of the most widely used drugs all over the world. In the last few years, other drugs to treat erectile dysfunction, like Cialis and vardenafil, have entered the ED treatment race. All of these three drugs have to be taken at least 45-60 minutes prior to intercourse. In most cases the erection lasts for more than 2 hours and in some cases for the rest of the day. Today, use of Viagra and Cialis are standard therapy for males with diabetes and impotence.

Viagra and other related drugs are also widely used for recreational purposes. Many people who do not have erectile dysfunction also consume these medications, under the belief that it will boost their erections. Some believe that Viagra can make the erections last forever. While the studies are limited, there is little evidence to indicate that Viagra or related drugs do anything for healthy people who have no problems achieving an erection. There are many men who take Viagra with the hope that they will be able to conceive and have a family. There is no doubt that Viagra does help men who have erectile failure but does this also means that there is a corresponding increase in fertility?

There are many anecdotal reports on Viagra couples have submitted, discussing failure of Viagra to improve fertility. Only a few controlled studies have looked at Viagra and the ability to conceive. One key study from Ireland has cast doubt on the ability of Viagra to help couples conceive. This study showed that sperm exposed to Viagra became damaged. The study showed that in the presence of Viagra, fewer female eggs were fertilized and the result was fewer pregnancies. Other reports indicate that there has been no increase in pregnancy in women who visit in vitro fertility clinic while their male partner had been using Viagra for more than 2-3 years.

Consumers have to understand that the process of conceiving is complex and just achieving an erection is only a small part. The men must also have viable sperm and then there are factors about the female’s sexual organs that must be functional. When Viagra was first introduced in the late 90′s, it was meant for older males who were having problems with erections and not interested in having children. Now young men have started to use the drug in the hope of enhancing fertility.

Unfortunately, without any medical evidence, several in vitro fertility clinics prescribe Viagra to males as a fertility-increasing medication. Viagra was never meant to be a drug for fertility and that is why there is a lack of studies on this topic. There definitely have been some couples who have conceived while using generic Viagra but this has been perceived to be more of a chance than a Viagra-related issue. The good news about generic Viagra is that the drug is safe. So far, after 9 years of continued use, there have been no reports of adverse effects on the mother or the baby.

The drug company Pfizer continues to insist that Viagra does not affect fertility. The billions of dollars the company perceives as profit from Viagra sales have compromised the drug giant’s agenda. Last year, sales scaled up to $1.9 billion. While there is little data on other drugs like Levitra and generic Cialis, experts indicate that just like Viagra, these drugs do not increase fertility and there is a greater chance that the drug may affect sperm. In any case, more studies are required to determine the role of Viagra in fertility issues. Viagra was meant to improve erectile dysfunction, and its use should be limited to that purpose.
