Americans Are Annoying Abroad
There is a widely accepted belief that traveling helps an individual to discover his or her personality. People agree that the best way to discover yourself is to go traveling around the world or a place which resembles least your own community. Allegedly, this is the only way you’ll ever get to know your limits.
Although not everybody can afford the luxury of traveling, people always try to get as far as they can from their home because there is no other better way to relax, get away from daily routine and experience things that one would never normally think of doing. Americans, however, are ones of the most passionate travelers – almost as passionate as they are about generic Viagra. Often, Americans travel because they simply can afford it and going abroad is their idea of growing up and becoming totally independent. Their reasons are very truthful, though the question is whether an American really manages to learn anything from the places and situations when being abroad.
There are several ways Americans can be annoying abroad. Perhaps the reason behind this general impression people have is Americans are known to expect to find America wherever they go. This could be a direct result of the size of the United States and the fact that all states within are pretty much the same to some degree. And when Americans get out of their own country they are often put in a situation in which they have to travel through several non-English countries in just one week. For instance, most Americans enjoy traveling through Europe as part of their “growing up” process. Yet neighboring countries in Europe are so different from one another, the experience eventually turns out to be somewhat overwhelming.
But perhaps the most heard of complains about annoying Americans are related to their ability (or better said inability) to speak other languages. Because English has become an international language at one of the greatest levels, Americans genuinely expect to be spoken to in English even though they are in a non-English speaking country. Moreover, more annoying can be their inability to adhere to the new society and try to fit in. the truth is that they do not really need to fit in because when traveling around the world, one does not get to spend too much time in the same country. But this could be another way in which Americans are annoying to locals. And to be fair, English individuals are not too far from Americans either when it comes to the ability of learning another language or culture.
Yet Americans are no different than other travelers. If you’ve ever met Chinese or Japanese travelers you’d know what we mean. Having pictures of the places you have visited is one thing, but lost of people would agree that travelers from the Far East tend to exaggerate with their picture taking. Americans can be annoying travelers for many reasons, but they sure are not alone.
