Even when both men and women snore, it is known fact that men snore more than women. Lifestyle has a lot to do with why men are the bigger snorers. This condition is breathing noise due to partial obstruction of air passages. This obstruction usually involves mouth and throat soft tissues that relax during sleep, blocking said air entries and exits. But what is the big deal with a little snoring? Besides some noise, snoring can’t really harm anyone, right? False. Find out why.Snoring being constant and pretty loud noise produced close to the ear can affect people’s hearing. Snoring is something that affects not only the person sleeping next to the snorer, but the person with the condition as well. This issue can affect the balance in your sleeping patterns, leaving you exhausted the next day and consequently irritable and with lower reaction capacity. Snoring can affect a personal relationship. Constantly having to deal with a snoring condition tires out your partner and makes him or her irritable. On the long run, snoring can cause high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke.

An alternative solution to eliminate snoring is wearing a mouthpiece device. Also known as dental appliances or mandibular advancement splints, mouthpieces have proven effective for many men with this condition, including apnea patients. Mouthpieces are plastic devices you wear inside your mouth while you sleep to prevent throat soft tissue from obstructing your air passage way. By bringing forward the lower jaw and lifting the soft palate, a mouthpiece properly arranges your mouth and allows optimum air passage; some are even design to keep your tongue from blocking your wind pipe.

Mouthpieces are custom made and are usually a prescription device. By prescription, I mean you need to have your dentist prescribe and manufacture a custom made mouthpiece for you. The over-the-counter alternative is purchasing an athletic mouthpiece that might help you out in a similar fashion. However, like all things specialized, you would be better off with a custom made mouthpiece designed to help your airway stay clear throughout the night.

The FDA seems to have colluded with dentists in making mouthpieces a prescription item — so you’ll either have to order from a non-US website or talk your dentist into writing you a prescription for a cheaper device. You can also buy athletic mouthpieces without a prescription — for example, the Brain Pad — which have been used successfully by some of our readers.

Side effects for using a mouthpiece include dryness, tooth discomfort, and excessive salivation. However, these are mild compared to what chronic snoring can do to you and your partner. Another concern future users have is about teeth alignment. Your teeth are more likely to shift when using a soft plastic mouthpiece, when compared with hard plastic devices. However, teeth shifting varies significantly from one user to the next. For this not to be a concern, the ideal situation would be you are constantly consulting your specialized physician and checking in with your dentist.

Among the many side effects lack of sleep can have on a man besides irritability and poor concentration in performing particular tasks, erectile dysfunction, heart conditions and deftness top the list. Regular loud noises near the ear slowly but surely begin to affect your hearing capacity and deteriorate it as time passes by. Poor blood flow will contribute to heart conditions and possible stroke in combination with possible weight gain due to lack of sleep. Deficient blood flow and overweight will also affect your sexual functions, making your erections poor or non-existent. These will lead you to take heart medication and ED treatments like generic Viagra or the like. Make sure to practice preventive care instead by consulting a sleep specialist about the right treatment for you. Stop snoring and live a better life, today!
