Longevity in Men

Out of every one hundred patients that enter a hospital for injuries or emergency situations, sixty of them are men. It is more likely to see a little boy hurt himself while playing due to the nature of those games (wrestling, adventure quests and violence-related interaction). It is also more likely to see teens get hurt from playing extreme sports and full contact wrestling or football; all sports and activities in which girls are outnumbered by boys.

I believe I mentioned my friend Rob in “Why Men Don’t Like Doctors”. If you are not well acquainted with his ways Rob is the poster boy of, well, boys. He and his two brothers have made their poor mother’s head blow up into pieces one too many times. Falling off of roof tops, driving cars into: other cars, dirt walls, mud pools, etc., getting into who knows how many fights (alone, all three together, two at a time, you name it). The M boys are basically aggressive (in a not so violent manner), adventurous, and certainly know no limits to their imagination. Juggling with flaming cloth props, jumping into wild river ponds from unimaginable heights and drinking their asses off at every single party they went to start to define them. As you can see, these boys are by far more exposed to dangerous health threatening situations than, well, most people and certainly than most girls.

The description of my friend and his brothers above encompasses the very basic top ten of what men do and why they should avoid these behaviors if they wish to live longer:

  1. No violence. The more violent you behave the more prone you are to end up cut, bruised, broken or dead. Cut it out.
  2. Leave racing for NASCAR. Driving safely prevents you getting hurt in a number of ways. Besides, if you are not trying to beat Schumacher, there is also a lesser chance of hurting or killing somebody else.
  3. Work Hazards. Regardless of the line of work you do, I am sure there are precautions and measure to be taken in order to prevent health threatening accidents. Wear the vest or hard cap or gloves. They are not there to get in your way, they were designed to keep you from hurting yourself.
  4. Excessive drinking. I know you heard a little glass of scotch or wine a day is good for your health, but taking that into astronomical disproportions and drinking your eyes out is out of the question if you want to live 10 more years. the thing is alcohol deteriorates your body functions, including those of your brain. If things start failing on you there is little chance for quality of life further on. Combined with heavy drinking there simply is no room for violence, driving or anything really that can be harmful to you and those around you.
  5. Love thy self. Yes, self-love is important too. If you are okay with the big guy inside, you are less likely to suffer from depression and suicidal thoughts. Make the things you do matter and be meaningful for who you are and what you want from life.

Break those percentages everybody is flashing around, about how women outlive men. Be the exception to the rule and try living your life as best as you can. You already knew those five things I just mentioned. Find other five that can also improve the way you live.
