As more and more older men are affected by ED, some governments may be considering giving out free Viagra or other medication alike to treat them. This is the case with the government of Mexico City that a year ago included this type of medication in the health insurance plans because “everyone has the right to be happy”, as the government itself states. Learn more about the Mexico City 2009 initiative of giving free Viagra to people who suffer from ED and the repercussions this action had around the world.

The action from Mexico City started in fact in the last month of 2008. Driven by the slogan “everyone has the right to be happy”, the Mexican government included Viagra and ED medication in the national insurance plans which basically means that every sufferer gets free Viagra if he meets the requirements. The initiative was driven carefully and every ED sufferer had to undergo several medical screening procedures to make sure that they are really affected by the condition and they are not just willing to take advantage of the free wonder pill. According to the Mexican government, over 70% of the men in Mexico City were then suffering from ED and therefore the initiative was worth it.

Of course that the action became quickly a national issue and it spread around the world very rapidly. Although Viagra is in fact one of the best drugs to treat a medical condition like erectile dysfunction, its popularity and the image it has been associated to, it made the other citizens reluctant in willing to pay for free Viagra for the elderly. The problem was whether generic Viagra was really worth to be paid from the tax-payers money given that the sexual life of an elderly may not have a very great impact on the quality of his life. Whereas the government’s initiative was aimed to improve the quality of life of the elderly by improving their sex lives, the majority of the tax-payers did not see the problem from the same point of view as the government.

The Mexican initiative did not stop here. The idea quickly spread to the neighboring countries but in a kind of reverse order. If the elderly in Mexico City could get free Viagra, why wouldn’t the Americans as well? Viagra used to be free for some categories of men in America as well. But in most states or districts, when budgetary measures needed to be taken to save more money for the government, the first on the list to take away was free Viagra. After the Mexican action, the union of teachers has constantly tried to regain this right “to happiness” for the people they represent.

Viagra, included in the health insurance plan, is still a question to debate mainly because most tax-payers do not see the medicine as needed to actually treat a medical condition but more like a drug to provide sexual satisfaction.
