Did you know there are around 250,000 sweat glands in your feet, that release about a cup of moisture on a daily basis? Yes, feet sweat like crazy. And yes, for some it is a very uncomfortable and embarrassing condition, because sweat -as we all know- also produces bacteria-induced smell. Even when sweaty feet is a physical condition, people’s tendency to buy shoes made out of man-made materials has worsen the problem. With a market packed with cheap plastic shoes, can we really blame anyone but ourselves for having personal sweat pools on our feet?

Most likely, if you have sweaty feet, you also have other sweaty body parts. Most cases of sweaty feet are accompanied by excessive perspiration elsewhere on the body. However, the “localized” foot sweating and consequent smelling is also a reality for many. Causes go from wearing synthetic material shoes and socks to faulty hygiene, and in several cases both.

Excessive perspiration and bacteria growth are known to cause the infamous athletes foot. Athletes foot, for example, causes the feet to itch, scale and crack. All of these result in a very painful and very uncomfortable day-to-day. This should be of special consideration concerning shoes you wear to really demanding and sweat-producing activities: going to the gym, running around with your dog, playing at the park with your kids, working in a physically demanding environment.

Because all of these increase body temperature and require comfortable footwear, we are bound to find ourselves wearing the very known tennis shoe. Most tennis shoes are made out of man-made materials due to their endurance and versatility. However, having your feet enclosed in a synthetic shoe is obviously going to cause your feet to sweat harder. Therefore, specialists recommend you take your tennis shoes off right after you are done exercising; keep them in a well-ventilated space; and wear cotton fiber socks while excessing. If you can afford leather tennis shoes, even better.

For everyday shoes, there really is no on answer. Gym instructors might be reading this article saying “What about me, I wear tennis shoes all day!” Well, it’s true not all people are going to have the same needs in the shoe department. So, a general recommendation for all would be to find comfortable, leather shoes that fit you right (not too big, not too small). Leather shoes breathe better and help your feet be less of the sweaty kind. Leather shoes too expensive for you? Well, then consider one of two options. Get less shoes of a better quality; or find shoes you can wear with cotton socks or insert soles and change them often.

Feet are often underminded and it is only when they fail us that we remember to take care of them. Specialists like podiatrists and professional pedicure practitioners are excellent, if not the best, professionals to take care of your feet. You have to do the rest. Like you trim you nose hair, and remember to purchase the monthly dose of generic Viagra, you should learn to take care of your feet and nails.
