To Drink Or Not To Drink
The question has been asked over and over and studies state the negative and positive effects good old beer and other stronger spirits have upon our bodies and overall health. Some defend the benefits liquor has for our arteries and heart; there are also those who sanction drinking at all in pro of good old-fashioned health. Sometimes believed to cure the worst of evils, liquor has been a historical part of human living. Be it a magical potion or a man-made evil, beer, scotch and other more crafty concoctions are still sitting on our tables year-round, for special occasions and bad.
Questionable as it is, the consumption of spirited drinks in men is here to stay – as it has stayed for centuries. Alcoholic drinks are part of a man’s life whether he drinks or not. Alcohol is usually present in national and international holiday celebrations, they are part of vacation and joyous occasions like the birth of a child, a marriage, graduation; alcohol is present during a get-together among friends, at a quiet dinner date with a loved one, and a faithful companion on a rain afternoon in front of the fire place or while watching a game.
Specific drinks are emotionally linked to particular occasions and human imagery. Wine is considered elegant, while drinking whiskey is for big money. Champagne and sparkling wine is part of important toasts and special celebrations like and engagement or wedding, an anniversary or part of the stash in any rapper’s night out. Certain types of liquor also represent social status; drinking cheap sparkling wine is not for the people spending hundreds of dollars in a bottle of Dom by Moët & Chandon or Cristal champagne.
Of course, drinking during the holidays will have a lot to do with your drink of choice and the environment you find yourself in. Dinner suggests a nice red wine while drinks with friends on a cold Christmas night is more likely to be better accompanied by a high-quality whiskey. A night in with your girlfriend will be toasted off with a cold flute of fine champagne.
Just like a hot summer night can end perfectly with an ice-cold beer or a well-mixed margarita topped by a colorful umbrella, the holidays seem to be times of tasting more than chugging. To truly appreciate the flavors in a premier liquor or wine, pair it up with some nuts or cheeses. Make the most of this holiday season and take advantage of imported European goods that marry perfectly with one of those nice bottles you’d been saving for these festivities.
Be careful though. Not only drinking and driving can end up sadly, but drinking has other health hazardous consequences. Drinking has been known to make people more extroverted and therefore more friendly. As your liquor gets you all perky and touchy-feely, it is also making it more difficult for you to get an erection, by messing with your bloodflow and blood thickness – something no generic Viagra can fix at the time. Your reflexes also become impaired and poor judgement calls can lead to regretable situations. Anything from making a fool of yourself in front of a known or unknown crowd to more serious accidents, alcohol can too play some woeful tricks on you this season.
