Men Against The Doctor

Hospitals and doctors are at the bottom of most men’s to-do list. Unless their condition is keeping them from breathing, the odds are that men will do anything they can to avoid going to see a doctor. “Doctor-phobia” appears to be a very common fear among men of all ages and races. Ever wonder why? Maybe some of them have been traumatized during their childhood by a nurse that took their blood or just told them to open their mouth to look at their throat. Regardless of the root of the problem, the fact is that men refuse seeing doctors for even the simplest of health problems.
Some could say that one of the biggest issues with men’s health is that they do not take into consideration visiting a doctor as soon as they develop symptoms of different conditions. Why are men against the doctor? Maybe the issue comes from their genuine inability to believe in preventive medicine although you can hear all around prevention is better than finding a cure. Or maybe their reluctance to get an appointment with a doctor is caused by the idea that going to a hospital makes you weak. And weakness is the last thing men want to be associated with. In our opinion, we will never know what causes this silly fear that seems to seize men all over the world when they have to face health problems.
Luckily for them, there often is nagging life partner around. One of the most important reasons why men actually get to their appointment (after weeks of avoiding them) is the constant female encouragement which in most cases drives them crazy. It is still a mystery why men prefer hearing their girlfriends or wives complaining all day long for weeks instead of simply going to the doctor. What is even more interesting is that regular checkups ensure a better health status through a very simple blood test and other harmless exams.
Not only are men reluctant to go to a doctor but attending appointments suddenly encourage unbelievable ways to excuse them from going. As you probably know from your own experience, men are known to come up with some of the most complex strategies to avoid their doctor’s appointments. Be it for a generic Viagra prescription or a rectal exam, the simplest excuse is due. They seem to be too busy to make time for the good doctor. The likelihood that this manly attitude towards medical care changes is small. Studies have long shown that men go to the doctor four times less than women, and consequently are four times more propense to suffer from stronger illnesses than girls. Creatures of habit, I guess. I sure don’t like going.
