Men Are Visual

Ever heard the popular saying that men are visual beings? Sometimes criticized for being shallow and superficial, men have historically proven to be more drawn to select a partner based on visually appealing physical attributes. But is it that men are really that shallow or is there a natural instinct in us to do so? While women continue to use men’s shallowness as an excuse for not getting their man, here are a few points on why men go for looks first, second and third.

The first and most obvious reason is that physical attributes have always been part of most of human evolution. Humans have always seen strength, speed, youth and energy as admirable attributes (all physically observable). These make others genetically desirable, clearly making sense in terms of mate selection criteria. Desirable attributes were for the most part chosen visually, evaluating the traits of females. Fixations like men obsessing over women with large breasts has to do with the primitive instinct to like females capable of offering the best nutrition for offspring.

Continuing the elemental instinctive theory, men are more visual because they are genetically programmed to impregnate and leave on to the next female they can again impregnate and leave. The best way to choose said females as genetically desirable is through the eyes. Quick and purely animal instinct observes the possible mate, assesses physical qualities, impregnates and leaves. These eligible females are young, strong, fast, and healthy; big boobs being the modern day equivalent of healthy (or desirable, in other words).

So, in a world of physically altered females are men choosing their preferred mates based on lies? Not important. As said earlier, it is all about the way it looks, at first instinct at least. It is likely that this might be the reason for plastic surgery and other image altering practices started. The less attractive females who found themselves unable to attract males to impregnate them turned to ways of making themselves more attractive.

And so it is. Thanks to plastic surgeons, the cosmetic industry, the world of fashion and reality TV, unfitted women of yesterday are the ugly ducklings turned Swans of today. Are men being influenced by their own game, falling into the same plastic surgery and sexual enhancement product routine. After all, generic Viagra is indeed a by hit among fellow men, isn’t it?
