Man Boobs

Gynecomastia (what we know as ‘man boobs’ or ‘moobs’), is a condition referred to the enlargement of male breast tissue. This kind of tissue growth may present itself throughout the different stages of life. Because this hormonal unbalance is likely to happen at different stages in life, the trauma cloud can go a long way. Having man boobs is not something to laugh about, yet men have teased their fellow mates about male breasts for ages and it has even become a pop culture “thing” popular TV shows and movies use or bring up.

From puberty to old age, all men are susceptible to suffer from gynecomastia due to a hormonal unbalance. During puberty, hormonal changes make kids put on some weight sometimes referred to as “baby fat”. Baby fat and man boobs soon melt away as little men grow older. Those kids that for some reason keep overweight during puberty are prone to follow this trend into adulthood, increasing the possibility of keeping man boobs during early adulthood and further on. The problem with carrying this trend as they get older is that men stop producing as much testosterone, as they age. Therefore, more female hormones are produced and these further increase breast tissue growth.

So young adults enter this stage of life with a handicap. Like some overweight people or those suffering from a distinctive physical defect, establishing personal relationships (specially physical) results terribly difficult. Many start by constricting their breasts, avoid public places they would have to take their shirts off and are reluctant or scared of being intimate with someone they love because it would mean being in the nude. Lack of experience at an older age can result in several dysfunctions. Issues such as ejaculation problems, erectile dysfunction or loss of libido are some of the consequences of a deteriorated and embarrassing self-image.

Some men even gain weight to a point where their health is affected, in order to balance the size of their breasts and that of their bodies. They believe that by gaining weight their proportions will hide the protuberance of their breasts. Doing this puts them at risk not only of suffering from sexual dysfunction aspects but it also puts them at risk of heart failure and other diseases associated to overweight. As with other patients suffering from erectile dysfunction due to other conditions, men with gynecomastia can also take treatments like generic Viagra and the like. However, it is important they first solve other more embedded psychological problems that might be the true reason of their problems.

Besides the psychological trauma gynecomastia can cause in a man, there is no physical damage this condition can cause. However, it can be a sign warning you about other conditions much more harmful to your health like hypogonadism, overactivity of the thyroid, cirrhosis, a genetic abnormality, or different types of cancer (breast, lung, adrenal gland, or testicular cancer). Eventually, dealing with gynecomastia at a more aestheric level would involve plastic surgery. Men who want their breasts removed have a way out!
