Sexual Dysfunction

Men’s sexual problems cover everything within the sexual response cycle both men and women have. Sexual problems prevent both the man and his partner from experiencing any or all types of satisfaction. Being unable to enjoy any one of the stages involved in the sexual experience, can often lead to sexual frustration, depression or the couple to get separated.

Being as common as it is, sexual dysfunction at any of its stages seems a topic most couples as such and as individuals are quite reluctant to discuss. What these people are unaware of is that most dysfunction cases are relatively easy to treat and can be solved if only they were to talk to their GPs or specialized doctors. As with any relationship, communication with your personal physician is key in order to maintain things well tunned and running smoothly.

But why are these problems presenting themselves in who would otherwise be considered perfectly healthy men (and women)? Sexual dysfunction can be rooted from two sources: physical or psychological. Physical causes may include hormonal imbalances, diabetes, neurological disorders, heart and vascular disease, chronic diseases (kidney or liver failure), alcoholism and drug abuse. Side effects of certain medication like antidepressants can also cause sexual dysfunction. Psychological causes, on the other hand, may cover anything from work-related stress and anxiety to sexual performance anxiety, marital or relationship problems, depression, guilt, and former sexual traumatic experiences.

Though more popularly and openly studied, not only men suffer from sexual dysfunction. Both men and women suffer from this problem and age is not an obstacle. However, incidence does tend to increase in older generations, probably related to aging health issues. Men who suffer from sexual dysfunction largely suffer from ejaculation disorders (premature ejaculation or the inability to ejaculate), erectile dysfunction (at different levels) and repressed sexual desire.

  • Ejaculation disorders are psychological or physiological problems. The inability to ejaculate may be due to strict upraising, lack of attraction, and former traumatic events. Premature ejaculation on the other hand may take place do to a nervous character or self-inflicted pressure about sexual performance.
  • Erectile dysfunction is being unable to get or keep an erection strong enough to have satisfactory intercourse. Blood flow, hardened arteries, nerve disorders and psychological issues are possible causes for ED to take place. This condition is usually treated with therapy or ED treatments like generic Viagra.
  • Loss of libido refers to lack of desire or interest in sexual activity. This too can be triggered by both psychological and physiological factors. Low testosterone levels have been pointed out as a possible cause for this condition as have anxiety and depression, and problems within the relationship.
