With so many fake generic Viagra and cialis pills, many people have now been turning to natural remedies for treatment of impotence. Unfortunately, the alternative or natural supplement market is also overwhelming and almost everything underneath the sun is now being sold as a treatment for impotence.

The majority of natural remedies for impotence have never been tested in clinical studies and most reports about their efficacies are only made by manufacturers who have a vested interest in selling these products. Some positive anecdotal reports do exist about natural remedies for impotence but whether they work in everyone is anyone’s guess.

L arginine is the precursor amino acid to make nitric oxide – which is a potent vasodilator. Sildenafil citrate (Viagra) acts by increasing levels of nitric oxide in the penis and thus this amino acid is now widely sold for impotence. Experimental studies show that L- arginine can increase penile blood flow and boost erections. L arginine is also found in many foods like meat, dairy products and fish. There are also a variety of oral supplements that contain l-arginine but the purity does vary from store to store.

In males, there are only a few reports that l arginine works, but there are also many studies which reveal that it does nothing. L arginine can cause stomach cramps and should not be used by people who have peptic ulcer disease or reflux. Moreover, l arginine can alter levels of potassium in body and is not recommended for people who are on water pills and have abnormal heart rhythms. Like generic Viagra, l arginine needs to be taken at least 1 hr prior to the anticipated sexual activity and the ejections are said to last 1-2 hours.

Propionyl-L-Carnitine is also sold as an aid for impotence. Reports do exist that men who take l carnitine do have improved erectile function and better sexual satisfaction. L-carnitine has also been shown to work in individuals who have failed to respond to Viagra or cialis. Orientals have been using ginkgo for erectile dysfunction for many decades and there are isolated reports that it enhances blood flow to the penis. However, the effects of gingko are unpredictable and occur in less than 10% of people. Moreover, all the well-controlled studies to date have shown that gingko is no better than placebo at treating impotence.

Zinc is an essential mineral for many body functions and a few isolated reports indicate that it may enhance erections. However, in most reports the individuals were also taking other supplements and it is not known if zinc was directly responsible for the erections. The herb ashwagandha also known as the Indian ginseng is widely reputed to be like an aphrodisiac and enhances erections. While many isolated reports exists on its benefit, there have been no clinical studies to validate these claims.

Other natural remedies which are sold for erectile dysfunction, include maca, fo ti, Tongkat ali, Muira Puama, and horny goat weed. All these supplements are readily available but there is not one iota of evidence that they actually work. The one product not recommended for erectile dysfunction is yohimbine. This alkaloid is dangerous even in small doses. While it can cause erections, Yohimbine can induce a profound drop in blood pressure, cause severe fatigue, hallucinations and even paralysis.

All individuals who are seeking a natural remedy for erectile dysfunction should always read about the supplement first before buying it. Moreover, since the field of supplements is unregulated it is recommended that one only buy from a reputable store.
